Mary Bettencourt does it all at POSSO! Although officially our Grants Manager & Bookkeeper, Mary supports POSSO in countless ways. The second eldest of four siblings, Mary was born in Graciosa (Azores). At 9 months old, Mary immigrated to San Jose (CA) with her parents. When asked why she chooses to work at POSSO, Mary replied: “All my life I’ve enjoyed helping others. At a young age, I’d go to the Unemployment Office with my grandmother and some her friends who also worked as seasonal employees at the fruit canary to fill out forms and translate so that they could receive benefits during the off season. When I turned 14, I started working at a neighborhood pharmacy where Portuguese customers often came in for medication instructions and to purchase money orders and pay utility bills. Some would also ask me to read and translate their mail. One day I asked the owner why he paid me to help the Portuguese community and he said it was good customer service. He also said that one day I would understand the importance of serving others and how rewarding it is. It’s been many years since this conversation, but I often reflect on it, especially the part about how fulfilling it is to help others.” Like many other immigrant kids, Mary found herself needing to grow up fast, especially after a tragic accident in her immediate family. When Mary turned 16, her father became disabled. Throughout his life, Mary was his primary transporter and translator. As she explained, “I quickly learned that I needed to ask questions so that I could help determine what benefits were available to help my family.” Mary’s introduction to POSSO came after she became a parent and began her career at AT&T. In her own words, “After learning about POSSO I asked my grandmother one day if she would go with someone from POSSO to an appointment because I couldn’t leave work. She agreed. I still remember getting a call from POSSO updating me on her health so that I could follow up on her medications and other treatments. I felt so grateful for this service and that such support existed”. Fast forward to 2016: Mary was in San Jose helping care for her mother who was recuperating from a long hospital stay when POSSO’s Executive Director at the time, Bela Ferreira, called and invited Mary to come in for an interview. Mary still remembers her first POSSO client and how they often told her, “I’m alive because of POSSO. This organization has helped me for 20 years.” Mary has heard similar testimonies from other people since this day. “I can honestly say that this job is the most fulfilling and rewarding job I’ve ever had. I get to use my skills and knowledge and I get to learn something new every day. I am proud to be part of the POSSO team. I can’t believe this is my 8th year here!”. Thank you, Mary, for all you do for POSSO and the communities we serve.

Mary Bettencourt faz tudo na POSSO! Embora seja oficialmente nossa Gerente de Subsídios e Contabilista, Mary apoia a POSSO em inúmeras maneiras. A mais velha de quatro irmãos, Mary nasceu na Graciosa (Açores) e aos 9 meses emigrou para São José (CA) com os pais. Quando questionada sobre por que escolheu trabalhar na POSSO, Mary disse: “Durante toda a minha vida gostei de ajudar os outros. Ainda jovem, ia ao Gabinete de Desemprego com a minha avó e algumas amigas dela que também trabalhavam como empregados sazonais no canário das frutas. Eu preenchia formulários e traduzia para que eles pudessem receber benefícios durante a entressafra. Quando completei 14 anos comecei a trabalhar numa farmácia do bairro. Os clientes Portugueses vinham frequentemente receber instruções sobre medicamentos, comprar ordens de pagamento e pagar contas de serviços públicos. Alguns também me pediam para ler e traduzir suas correspondências. Um dia perguntei ao proprietário porque me pagava para ajudar a comunidade Portuguesa e ele disse que era um bom serviço ao cliente. Ele também disse que um dia eu compreenderia a importância de servir aos outros e como isso pode ser gratificante. Já se passaram muitos anos desde essa conversa, mas ainda reflito sobre isso, especialmente a parte sobre como é gratificante ajudar os outros.” Como muitas outras crianças imigrantes, Mary sentiu necessidade de crescer rapidamente, especialmente depois de um trágico acidente na sua família. Quando Mary completou 16 anos, seu pai ficou incapacitado. Até sua morte, Mary foi sua principal transportadora e tradutora. Como ela explicou: “Aprendi rapidamente que precisava fazer perguntas para poder ajudar a determinar quais benefícios estavam disponíveis para ajudar minha família”. A introdução de Mary a POSSO ocorreu quando ela tinha filhos e começou sua carreira no AT&T. Nas suas próprias palavras: “Ouvi falar da POSSO e um dia perguntei à minha avó se ela iria com alguém a uma consulta porque eu não podia sair do trabalho. Ela concordou. Ainda me lembro de receber uma chamada da POSSO me atualizando sobre sua saúde para que eu pudesse acompanhar seus medicamentos e outros tratamentos. Fiquei muito grata por existir esse serviço e apoio”. Avançando para 2016: Mary estava em San Jose ajudando a cuidar de sua mãe, que se recuperava de uma longa internação hospitalar, quando a Diretora da POSSO na época, Bela Ferreira, ligou para ela e a convidou para uma entrevista. Mary ainda se lembra do seu primeiro cliente na POSSO e como ele sempre dizia a Mary: “Estou viva por causa da POSSO. Esta organização me ajudada por 20 anos.” Mary ouve testemunhos semelhantes de outras pessoas. “Posso dizer honestamente que este trabalho é o mais gratificante. Posso usar minhas habilidades e conhecimentos e aprendo algo novo todos os dias. Tenho orgulho de fazer parte da equipe POSSO. Não acredito que este é o meu 8º ano aqui!”. Há um ainda mais importante: o Dia Nacional do Doador de Órgãos. Fevereiro é o Mês Nacional de Prevenção do Câncer. Seguir uma dieta saudável, praticar exercícios e proteger a pele do sol pode reduzir o risco de desenvolver câncer. Este também é o Ano Bissexto, uma oportunidade de celebrar a cada quatro anos o dia extra em 29 de Fevereiro! Se você é fã da NFL, sabe que não há dia tão especial em Fevereiro quanto o domingo do Super Bowl. Fevereiro também é o mês do Carnaval! Cinco dias antes da Quarta- feira de Cinzas, cidades pelo mundo a fora explodem em cores dramáticas, música e dança enquanto as pessoas celebram esta ocasião anual. Se houver interesse em participar nas atividades de Carnaval, a Banda Portuguesa de São José (PBSJ) irá organizar duas noites de animação: 2 e 9 de Fevereiro. Além dos bailinhos de Carnaval, a PBSJ venderá filhoses e bifanas. A POSSO também tem muitas coisas interessantes acontecendo este mês: desde viagens ao cassino, uma noite de chamarittas e aulas de culinária! Esperamos você em nosso centro.

It’s February: the month of love, self-care and celebration. Although it may be the shortest month of the year, February is jam-packed. February 14th is predominantly known as Valentine’s Day, but it’s not the only occasion. There’s one that’s even more important: National Organ Donor Day. This holiday is about encouraging new people to consider becoming organ donors. February is National Cancer Prevention Month. Eating a health diet, exercising, and protecting your skin from the sun can reduce your risk of developing cancer. This is also Leap Year, providing a once-every-four-year opportunity to celebrate the extra day on Feb. 29! If you’re a fan of the NFL, you know there’s no day as special in February as Super Bowl Sunday. Even non-football fans can’t help but get swept up in the excitement, pandemonium, and grandeur of the day. February is also the month of Carnival! Five days before Ash Wednesday, cities all over the world erupt in dramatic colors, music and dance as people celebrate this annual occasion. If you’re interested in participating in Carnival activities, the Portuguese Band of San Jose (PBSJ) will be hosting two evenings of entertainment: 2 February and 9 February. In addition to “bailinhos de Carnaval” PBSJ will be selling filhoses and bifanas. POSSO also has many exciting things happening this month: from casino trips to a night of chamarittas and cooking classes! We look forward to seeing you at our center.
