Este ano, ondas de calor simultâneas estão sufocando os EUA, grande partes da Europa e partes da Ásia. Já é o suficiente para colocar 2023 em uma trajetória para se tornar o ano mais quente desde que os registros começaram nos 1800s.

O calor mata mais Americanos do que qualquer outro evento climático, incluindo tornados e inundações, embora a maioria das mortes relacionadas ao calor possam ser evitadas por meio de divulgação e intervenção. O corpo normalmente se resfria pela transpiração, mas o calor extremo pode interromper sua capacidade de fazer isso, levando potencialmente à exaustão pelo calor ou insolação. Adultos mais velhos, crianças pequenas e pessoas com doenças crônicas como diabetes estão em maior risco. Mas isso não significa que pessoas saudáveis sejam imunes.

Durante o dia, cubra as janelas, apague as luzes e evite usar o fogão ou forno. Se você mora numa área seca, pendure toalhas molhadas para refrescar o ambiente.

À noite, se as temperaturas caírem, mantenha as janelas e persianas abertas. Outra coisa que você pode fazer para se refrescar é mergulhar os pés acima dos tornozelos e os braços acima dos cotovelos em água fria por 10 a 15 minutos. Lembre-se de se manter hidratado. Não espere até sentir sede para beber líquidos. E limite sua exposição ao sol ficando na sombra ou usando um guarda-sol. Sempre coloque sunbloco e use óculos escuros e um chapéu ou boné de abas largas se sair.

Average temperatures for the entire globe have been at their highest, scientists say. The hottest June on record was followed by July, the hottest month in history. This year, simultaneous heat waves are suffocating the USA, much of Europe and parts of Asia. It’s already enough to put 2023 on a trajectory to become the warmest year since record-keeping began in the 1800s.

Heat kills more Americans than any other weather event, including tornadoes and flooding, even though most heat-related deaths are preventable through outreach and intervention. The body normally cools itself by sweating, but extreme heat can interrupt your ability to do that, potentially leading to heat exhaustion or heat stroke. Older adults, young children and people with chronic illness like diabetes are most at risk. But that doesn’t mean healthy people are immune.

Symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, vomiting and cold, pale or clammy skin. The Center for Disease Control says you should seek treatment if such symptoms worsen or last more than one hour.

Spending just a few hours in an air-conditioned space can help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat, according to the CDC. So take advantage of public spaces with air conditioning, like libraries and shopping malls.

During the day, cover your windows, turn off the lights and avoid using the stove or oven. If you live in a dry area, hang wet towels to cool the room.

At night, if temperatures drop, keep your windows and shutters open. Another thing you can do to help keep cool is soaking your feet above the ankles and arms above the elbows in cool water for 10-15 minutes. Remember to stay hydrated. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink fluids. And limit your sun exposure by staying in the shade or using an umbrella. Always put on subblock and wear sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat or cap if you do go outside.

A POSSO está aqui para ajudar! Oferecemos aulas do DMV em Português para pessoas que estão se inscrevendo pela primeira vez e para pessoas com mais de 70 anos que precisam fazer uma prova escrita para renovar a Carta de Condução.

Pessoas com mais de 70 anos que estão renovando sua carta de condução são obrigadas a ir ao DMV, preencher um requerimento, pagar uma taxa, completar um teste de visão e fazer um teste de 25 perguntas. A taxa de inscrição permite 3 chances de aprovação. Se você falhar 3 vezes, terá que se inscrever novamente e pagar a taxa novamente. É fundamental que você não permita que sua Carta de Condução expire! Certifique-se de visitar um DMV antes que isso aconteça. O DMV lhe dará uma extensão se precisar de mais tempo para estudar.

De acordo com uma lei da Califórnia chamada AB60, qualquer pessoa que reside no estado, independentemente do estado de imigração, pode solicitar uma carta de condução. Como os documentos de identificação variam entre países é uma boa ideia marcar um apontamento come a POSSO para que alguém possa revisar seus documentos e explicar o processo.

Você pode solicitar que o teste verbal seja realizado em português, mas a maioria dos escritórios do DMV colocará um tradutor no telefone. Existem alguns DMVs que têm uma pessoa que fala português que lerá as perguntas em voz alta e marcará a resposta que você disser. Se lhe for negado um teste escrito em português ou outro idioma disponível, você tem o direito de falar com o gerente do DMV que está no local e explicar que nunca usou computador e necessita o teste em escrito.

Importante: Se você for reprovado em um exame oftalmológico (da vista) no DMV, poderá ser necessário fazer um exame de condução para renovar sua carta. Portanto, considere fazer um exame oftalmológico antes de ir ao DMV.

POSSO is here to help! We offer DMV classes in Portuguese for people who are applying for the first time and for those over 70 who are required to take a written test to renew their Driver’s License.

People over 70 who are renewing their driver’s license are required to go to the DMV, fill out an application, pay a fee, complete a vision test and take a 25 question test. The application fee allows you 3 chances to pass. If you fail 3 times, you have to re-apply and pay the fee again. It is critical that you do not allow your driver’s license to expire! Make sure to visit a DMV before this happens and ask for an extension if you need more time to study.

Under California law AB60, anyone residing in the state, regardless of immigration status, can apply for a driver’s license. Because identification documents can vary between countries, it is a good idea to make an appointment at POSSO so that someone can review your documents and explain the process.

Taking a test can provoke anxiety but try not to stress or get distracted when you are at the DMV. The DMV has designated testing areas so it is important that you understand where you should go to take the test. It is okay to ask the person at the DMV who is helping you to clarify where the testing area is located, where you can sit to take the test, and where the test needs to be dropped off for review.

You can ask for a written test in Portuguese at any DMV office throughout California. If they tell you that they are not available tell them to check because you know they are or ask to speak with a manager. The written knowledge tests are available in 32 foreign languages. Portuguese is available online or written. If you are not comfortable taking the test online request a written paper test. If you decide to do the written paper test, make sure you read each question and possible answers before selecting your final answer. There is no time limit so read each question carefully. You can skip a question and come back to it later. It’s important that all questions have an answer checked because if left blank it is automatically marked as wrong. Prior to turning in the paper test you can cross out a wrong answer and select the correct one. When the results of the written test are given to you, you can ask for additional time to review your incorrect answers. It is also good to review those you answered correctly.

In addition to a written exam, you also have the option to listen and respond to questions (also known as an audio exam). Or if you prefer, a verbal test that is only available in English. You can request the verbal test to be conducted in Portuguese but most DMV offices will put a translator on the phone. There are a few DMV’s that have a Portuguese speaking person who will read the questions aloud to you and will mark the answer you tell them. If you are denied a written test in Portuguese or other language that is available, you have the right to speak to the DMV manager and explain that you must have a written test because you have never used a computer.

Important: If you fail an eye exam at the DMV, you might be required to take a driving test to renew your license. So, consider taking an eye exam before you go to the DMV.
